Tradition demands it - every (2) years, at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, as well as the many innovations in the AC Schnitzer special accessories range, a very special vehicle is presented. And 2003 is no exception: The Concept Car, the AC Schnitzer V8 TOPSTER.
The basis is the BMW Z4 3.0i, in which however "no stone is left unturned". The most striking optical feature is the enclosed bodywork, now 13 cm wider, in colours orange / cream.

AC Schnitzer Tension Street Version

Naturally the "small brother" could not be a 1 : 1 copy of the Concept Car, as the TENSION is a technology showcase which demonstrates what is technically feasible. In contrast, the TENSION Street Version had to incorporate suitability for everyday use with no loss of driving pleasure or reliability.

The focal point of the development work was adaptation of the breathtaking, costly aerodynamic conversion for series production.

The bonnet of the AC Schnitzer TENSION, restyled from the standard 6-series, is used on the Street Version. It reveals at first glance, from its large air outlet edged in a chrome frame, that the ventilation of the power plant is actively supported by sufficient cooling air flow .

That being said, tuners can’t really do quite a lot to that car, BMW doing a great job on the exterior styling of the car. But AC Schnitzer decided to have a go at the sporty convertible and here’s the result: the ACS3 Sport Cabriolet. The german tuners have stayed away from the 420 bhp V8 engine, and instead opted to fit the model with a new sport suspension, and for a cooler noise, fitted the powerdome of the engine with two AC Schnitzer Vents to give a more gruntled sound. The exterior was slightly remodelled, the front end gaining a new carbon fiber lip, modular side skirts to attract attention to the 20 inch wheels and the new AC Schnitzer high performance braking system. The rear was fitted with a carbon fiber rear diffuser and a silencer with chromed tailpipes.

The AC Schnitzer program for the 5 series Touring includes - among others - several diesel power upgrades for the models 520d, 525d, 530d and 535d.
With the last mentioned one, the 5-series gets an extra 38 HP (28 kW), which increases the maximum torque of 90 Nm. Despite the increased power of the ACS5 3.5d, the excellent driving performance, moderate fuel consumption and superb durability naturally remain unchanged.
